The Aspen Institute Germany, in cooperation with the Initiative of Young Transatlanticists and the Young GSP Berlin, cordially invites you to an Oxford-Style Debate: Guarantor of Security or Unnecessary Risk: Should American Nuclear Weapons in Germany Be Reassessed?

with

Senior Associate Fellow, DGAP

Policy Fellow, European Council on Foreign Relations
Gideon Rose
Adjunct Senior Fellow, Council on Foreign Relations and
other speakers (tba).

Nuclear Sharing is considered a cornerstone of European security by many. Recent developments in U.S. foreign policy, however, have hit the transatlantic community as a seismic shift, with Vice President Vance's speech at the Munich Security Conference at its epicenter. Have American Nuclear Weapons stationed in Germany become more risk than reward? Are there Europeexclusive alternatives?

The debate will take the form of an “Oxford-Style Debate,” with two teams facing each other and discussing this topic with the help of a moderator. Each team will advocate for a specific argument. Throughout the debate, the goal is to convince the audience of the team's position. Team 1 will argue that the stationing of American nuclear weapons in Germany should be maintained as an essential part of the transatlantic alliance and European security strategy. Team 2, on the other hand, will advocate for Germany and its European partners to free themselves from nuclear dependency on the United States.

They will argue that uncertainties regarding the reliability of the United States as an alliance partner make it necessary to develop a purely European security strategy. Before and after the debate, the audience will be able to vote, which side of the argument they find more convincing. After the discussions, questions from the audience will be possible.
